Monday 12-22-14

Here we are during our art workshop with Mr. Brunelle, part of Wellness Day at BRMS.

Today, Ms. Lamb's CPR group visited three wellness workshops: yoga, fitness planning and art. Then, after lunch and recess we had some mindful mandala coloring followed by an interesting presentation on media and tobacco by Rob Williams. All in all, an informative and restorative day.

There will be no homework this week. Students may want to work on their biography projects for Leadership and Legacy. The approximate due date for projects in January 15.

Tomorrow we will have a team celebration. The schedule is something like this.
CPR large circle (like ATM) attendance and announcements.
Game of medic in the gym - both groups
Plan for group skits and talent show
PE/World Language
TALENT SHOW
lunch
recess
Coding or quite art activities
Indoor volleyball tournament (thank you Mr. Pless for organizing this)
5th grade chorus band concert

Ms. Lamb has to leave at 1:00 tomorrow for an eye docor appointment. If I don't get a chance to post tomorrow, I likely will over vacation. I'm still finishing the grades for last week's journals and wordstudy - look for grades to be posted in the next day or two.

Have a safe and wonderful holiday and vacation. (I plan to post pictures of tomorrow's festivities, but I sometimes get waylaid.

Monday 12-15-14

Welcome back!
I bet everyone is glad to be back at school (especially parents.) It's good to have our routine back. I hope everyone has power.

Today in LA we finished last week's word study. We will not have a new list this week or next.
We are still working on December's read-a-thon. See how many books and pages you can read by the end of January.

We start new Iblock in January. Kids got letters today telling their next iblock teacher. There might be a few errors, but most will be solid.

During iblock period we did an essential task: organized our binders and cubbies. That feels good.

This afternoon we have social studies for Fantastic and all have math menu.

Remember lessons are tomorrow. Check the schedule.

Tonight's homework:

Friday 12-12-14

Well, I never expected three days off before Christmas. Now I have no excuse to not have my decorations up.

Don't worry about work anyone, we will regroup on Monday and move forward. Maybe will all my time off I will create a syllabus so you know what is coming up.
Here is a note from Julie in the cafeteria.

Good Morning!!
Due to the school cancellations we are making the following changes to next week's menu:

Monday- Taco Salad (see 12/10)

Tuesday- Brunch Lunch (see 12/15)

Wednesday- Homemade Pizza (see 12/12)

Thursday- North Woods Beef Stew (see 12/17)

Friday- Grilled Chicken w/ Caesar Salad (see 12/18)

Please make an announcement to all students so that they are aware of the changes!

Thanks,
Julie

I know some folks travel for the holidays and will miss school Monday and Tuesday the 21st and 22nd. Although you will miss some fun, you will not miss or need to make up any work. On Monday we have an all school event involving stations and an assembly. On Tuesday we have our first trimester celebration involving games and activities.

See you next week.
Ms. Lamb

Tuesday 12-9-14

Even though I am now remebering to take a photo of our Hour of Code...I I left both ipads home. (I could use my phone  -both batteries are dead and I can't find the cord - just a little downside of tech note from your friendly blogger.)

Thanks to Mrs MacAnulty and her trusty iphone (and email) I did get a photo of our Hour of Code.
Here is our Room Full of Coders.

Today we started with an Hour of Code. Mrs. McDevitt (our BRMS Math Wizard) came to introduce the subject and we all got to mess around and geek out on the computers with coding.

Then we all had our LA/Math and Science/Social Studies classes.

Today's homework:
LA journal: Reading - what is your goal for the winter read-a-thon. What goals would be good for you. What are you reading now and what do you like (or not like) about it?

In I-block - we all relaxed with some cursive and winter classical music. Then we reviewed the parts of the brain and were introduced to our beautiful brain books. More on that Friday.

We start regular iblock for second trimester next Monday (at least that's the plan).

In social studies, we continue our research.

Friday 12-5-14

Happy Friday
Today in LA we practice our typing. Then we head off to the library. Make sure you get your books for the weekend and next week. We don't get to the library very often.

In Iblock we put our evidence into our big Evidence Binders kept at school. Parents may want to check these out sometime. They can be taken home for a night and returned the next day by parent request. All assessments are in these binders. This includes our three great personal narratives.

In social studies, we continue to research for our Vermont History Day projects.

In LA we had big discussion about horrible news when doing current events. We need to self monitor as we now live in the immediate access of the world wide web. Also, even very legitimate news sources are posting bad news. I personally stay away from it. I don't watch videos of horrible violence and therefore don't watch a lot of news, but I still get informed through print and radio.

Also, students are reminded of the need for source citing on current events journals and writing their own opinions of the event.

Ms. Lamb will now commit to grading journals every Friday and posting on Schoology.
This weeks assignments included word study packet, 20 notes, three journal entries. (Remember, all Wednesday journals go in your science journal now - everyone writes about science.)

Have a great weekend everyone.

Presentation formats may be one of these four choices:
A presentation board (large trifold)
A written report (paper)
A documentary (video or imovie)
A live skit performance

Mrs. Provost will be scheduling an imovie workshop with us so we all know how to use this tool.

Friday 11-7-14

A regular fun Friday.

Note: The pictures are in, but Mr. Meadows took them and then left for a dentist appointment without handing them out, so....Monday they will come home. Sorry about that.

We started in the lab posting our second drafts on YWP. Now others can read and give comments. We will work to finish these on Wednesday next week.

The trimester only has two weeks left (then it's Thanksgiving Break!)
We need to:
finish our narrative
take a narrative assessment
take a reading Istation assessment
do a read aloud test (one minute of read aloud)
Finish a Vermont and Me Social Studies assessment (Fantastic only)
and that's just LA and Social Studies.
I bet Mr. Meadows has a few more to kick in to the mix.

In social studies, each group (Bushmen, All Stars, Tamaris and Purple Prickly Piranahs) presented an overview of their hunting gathering society and how the environment influenced their culture. Next week we begin to anaylize how living in Vermont affects us.

Kids are off to PE/Music followed by Unified ARTS (COG)
When they return we read silently (USSR - uninterrupted sustained silent reading) only I'm going to interrupt a few to finish narratives and CLEAN OUR CUBBIES (they are getting a bit out of hand and possibly coming to life.)

Ms. Lamb will collect journals today. Remember, NANOWRIMO novelists share your novel with Ms. Lamb in place of Monday, Tuesday and Thursday journal writes.

See you next week. Enjoy the weekend.

Thursday, November 6, 2014

Friday October 31

I can't be at school today as I am attending a The Joy of Writing III with Georgia Heard (she's an originator of the writing workshop project we are working on at BRMS)

Here is what I imagine is happening:

LA kids are going to the lab to practice edutyping.com then to the library for book talk and checking out books.

Math kids continue to explore division.

Social studies kids are watching another installment of The Gods Must Be Crazy that we are using to picture a hunting and gathering society, agricultural society and post industrial society as we continue our Adapt projects with Schlunkland.

Science is probably floating or sinking something....I'm not really sure.

We have two specials in the afternoon and then silent reading and closing meeting.

Use the weekend to catch up on  reading, or to finish any work like word study or journal entries.

Monday 10-27-14

We started with an All Team Meeting.
First we discussed email. Did you know your CESU email is not private? Anything you write on email can be accessed by adminstration. That being said, sometimes what you think is a funny joke at someone, that person does not think it so and they can't question you or see your face and it almost always gets back to that person. Please be especially careful of feeling on email and beware that your email can be seen by others.
Then we did our CARES SHOUT OUTS TO:

Mason
Hannah
Piper
Danial

In LA, Ms. Lamb returned jounrals and word study and discussed quality work. Also she showed how to create google folders and/or post on YWP.

We are working full out on narrative writing this week, so we are taking one week off from word study. We will have a quiz on last week's words tomorrow.

Thursday 10-23-14

CPR - we played arm hockey - good game for indoor recess. Mr. Meadows played gaga - also good game for indoor recess.

In math we continue to divide.
In LA we reviewed and practiced how to do a current event journal entry. We read "Far From Home" and cited it like this:

Barber, Joe. "Far From Home." Scholastic News. 10-20-14.

They summarized with who, what, when, where, why how. Then we wrote what our thoughts opinions were. The whole thing should talk up about a page. Here is what mine looked like.

Kids are walking into the U.S. from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. Guides are hired by parents, but they leave the kids who walk many miles unaccompanied. This is a problem for the U.S. They are illegal undocumented immigrants. This is happening now and for the past several months.

This is frightening for these kids. I can't imagine anyone from this class walking 11miles alone across a desert. I also sympathise with the officials trying to figure out what to do with a thousand kids - they don't even know where to send them back to? How bad must it me for there for these kids to do this alone?

Mrs. Babbitt talked to the Fantastic group about National History Day. We will all complete a project under the Leadership and Legacy theme. If kids choose to, they can get ready to compete in December. The competition is in April or May. (This is the biography project.) BTW - you can't do the person you did in 4th grade...sorry, expand your horizons.

In Social Studies we worked with atlases today.
Sorry, I don't know what went on in science.

Homework today:
LA Current Events - yes you have to do another one on your own. Cite your source
Read for 30 minutes
Math: Page 49

Wednesday, October 22, 2014

Wednesday 10-22-14

Happy Wednesday!
In LA we settled on our Leadership and Legacy project topics (generally a biography). Mrs. Babbit talked to Awesome about the National History Day project we will all be completing. Fantastic will find out about it tomorrow.

Everyone now had a book source, cited it, and started reading and taking notes.

In math students are still working on division.

In math menu Awesome investigated some math game activities and Fanastic practiced some math games (all multiplication and division related).

Tomorrow, we switch activities.

Kids alos had band/chours, PE/World Language and Community, Organziation or Guidance today.

Wednesday 10-15-14

No pics today...sorry.

Ms. Lamb's Awesome Social Studies class worked more on finishing their social studies assessment Vermont and Me. The assignment is here

Vermont and Me

This should get finished over vacation if it is not.

Students and parents have an email describing how to access schoology.com for Ms. Lamb's classes. This is where you can track work that has been handed in and the standards grade. Work can be redone or completed. If resubmitted, you need to email Ms. Lamb so she knows to check it and chage the grade.

Progress Reports went home today. They do not need to be returned.

Science kids in Fantastic had a science assessment today. I also heard something about a math quiz.

Todays homework:
Seriously check your Monday and Tuesday journal to see that it has a date, and is complete.
Read your novel over vacation. You need to read the equivalent of 1200  pages for a 3 and a variety of genre. Break out of those graphic novels.

Finish your social studies Vermont project.

Cheers. Have a great mini-vacation.

Friday 10/10/14

It hasn't been my best week at blogging....but here's the day in a nutshell.
Mr. Meadows was home sick. Ms. Sweeny stepped in to sub for him. We enjoyed a day of calm excitement waiting for our afterschool 5/6 party to begin.

In LA we had library. Team Fantastic started their next post on YWP, Team Awesome finished The Gods Must Be Crazy. In social studies, Team Awesome learned about Culture Grams. We are doing a little research on Vermont to write our "how my environment affects the way I live" project to share with someone in another state.

I'm sure plenty went on in science and math, but I didn't have time to look in on them.

We are closing in on finishing our book No Talking. We taled about civil disobedience and grassroots movements.

Parent conferences are continuing. Wedesday is the last day to sign up, but we will never refuse to see you.  If you couldn't find an opening, please contact us.

Have a great weekend.

October 6, 2014 Monday

Somehow, Monday got away from me....so we have no great pictures.

Here's what happened.
We started with CPR our great morning meeting time. Ms. Lamb's CPR shared stories, shared costume ideas and played Huckle Buckle.

In LA we learned how to use a very cool site called the Vermont Online Library. We are looking for a person to study that fits the Vermont History Day theme of "leadership and legacy." There were many many great people to choose from.

In the end, students must have a book source and an internet source and be able to convince us that the person was a leader and left a postive legacy.

In science we continue to work on density. In Social Studies we had our last group work period for our hunting and gathering societies. Tomorrow we can work alone for one period, then we present in the afternoon.

We also had PE and Music and EXPs today.

Today's homework:
LA journal YWP prompt - redesign your room - no limits or choose your own topic, free choice

Read for 20 minutes

Math page 25 - remember your Examplars problem is due Wednesday. Come to class with a good draft.

Thursday

This afternoon we hiked to Mills River Park to use nature as our writing prompt. I already have heard some great things, so I can't wait to see the finished products.

There's a very active dragon mural going on at recess.

This morning in LA we finished our word study with a buddy sort or blind sort (practice quiz) and handed in our word study. Then we had a very mini writing lesson on experience writing - get inside your story and let your reader experience it with you. Do this with details, present tense and/or emotion.

We had band/chorus and study hall today as well as our regular closing meeting time. If you are lucky, you might have your homework finished before you get home.

Homework today:
LA: Current Events - find out about some news happening in the world or nation. Summarize, write your thoughts and cite your source.

Read for 20 minutes.

Writing about the things we need to be writers.

Our guest writer, Edie's grandmother and Ms. Lamb's writing mentor for years, Mrs. Ann Watson. We wrote about and discussed what we need in our writing environment. We need things like sharp pencils, quiet spaces and inspiration. We can't wait to start writing tomorrow.

We end the day on Tuesdays now with spelling - resort your words and write a brief explanation for each category. We moved library time to Fridays. We will see if it works.

Today's homework:
LA journal: write about what you are reading. Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of your character.

Read for 20 minutes

Group work in Social Studies - building a hunting and gathering society in Schlunkland.

This is a huge triumph - nothing on the floor! Everything is hung up! We now have labeled hooks. Time will tell if we can keep orderly.

Today's bloggers: Ms. Lamb

On Fridays we end with All Team Meeting. This week's Shout outs went to Edie, Jack, Thatcher and Haily - Hurrah!

Today we finished our first week of word study and now know the routine. Next week we start in our groups.
We read another chapter of No Talking and did some picture word note taking.
In science we continued with what floats?
and in social studies groups are still working on the descriptions of their hunting/gathering socieites.

Remember, no homework on the weekend - but some kids still owe their journals to Ms. Lamb. Don't forget them on Monday. If you were absent during the week, use your weekends to finish homework and classwork from the week past.
Enjoy the sunny weather.
